How Bob Kay Got His Groove GoingFunctional, Cool and Old School… Design elements and inspiration come from the past, from a book, a movie, a radius of an Indian fender, and the future.

Bob Kay is Torian Chopper Leathers’ leather designer. He doesn’t have to look far for inspiration; all he needs to do is open his barn door and go back in time. Sleds, Hot Rods and horses gets his juices flowing. Each offer a unique snaphot of design, lifestyle and performance.

Bob puts those design elements into the leather products that he builds. Torian Chopper Leathers’ products not only look good, they work as-billed and as-designed. And that means that he tests the products that he builds.

Roger Goldammer @ World Championship

Goldammer In The House - Two-time World Champion Roger Goldammer is on hand with his record- setting motorcycle Goldmember. The bike will compete in the World Championship, and will then be returning to the salt in just a month’s time for more record-setting attempts.

The single-cylinder (Harley-Davidson) supercharged, fuel-injected, nitrous oxide fueled machine has already secured a world record, and been in excess of 165 MPH on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The streets of Sturgis are beginning to fill with rally goers. Sturgis Update: Day 2 @ World Championships

As the day continues more and more people have found their way into Champions Hall to experience the Official Championship of Custom Bike Building. Their response to the quality of the motorcycles on display has been overwhelming. The motorcycles themselves represent the finest in custom motorcycle building from around the world. From classic retro rides to the most cutting edge industrial and modern designs, these motorcycles are the finest to be found anywhere.

From Team Brass Balls - Brass Balls Bobbers Military Digger has received a lot of action from the crowds. It represents the arm services of America and is painted army green with splashes of vivid colors. It embodies an old skool look with state-of-the-art features.

The motorbike is built with some cutting edge components from Metzeler tires to Crime Scene lights and air cleaner. A unique piece of the build is an engine from Crazy Horse, which is called a V-Plus engine. The bike not only looks good, but with the V-Plus it runs like a scalded cat.

Kiwi Mike Tomas has brought his 20+ years of experience and unique brand of motorcycle building to both Champions Hall and Champions Park. On display inside the hall is Mike’s example of what he calls a Retro American Motorcycle, the Chieftain. The new motorcycle, built from Mike’s exclusive pieces, is a perfect example of integrating yesterday’s looks with today’s technology and reliability. The bike will be the basis of a new limited production line Mike will be producing from his Riverside, California shop. Outside the hall Mike and son Ross have been busy at their trailer keeping the public informed on their latest offerings including production motorcycles as well as their over 2,500 piece parts catalog.

A welcome addition to this year’s Championship Hall has been fine artist Stefanie Aziere-Sattler. Stefanie was selected by S&S Cycle to help commemorate their 50th Anniversary by creating one of a kind oil paintings that reflect the company’s beginnings and rich racing history. It was a natural extension for Stefanie to bring her gallery of motorcycle and hot rod inspired images for attendees to enjoy. Stefanie specializes in custom pieces for people looking for one-off creations of their favorite ride.

S&S Cycle, located on the South Western corner of Champions Park, is full of factory-trained personnel ready to help both the consumer and professional with technical questions regarding their latest products. Major interest regarding S&S’s X-Wedge engine program, as well as their electronic Fuel Injection, has been keeping the staff busy since early this morning.

Indian has inspired many an enthusiast, rider, designer and businessman. One guy that ha though long and hard about what the future would hold is Palm Beach County, FL Carlos Suarez. Suarez, of CS Design Concepts, has very strong ideas about what the new Indian should look like.

The original Indian 4 was a hot ride because the back 2 cylinders wouldn’t get enough air and it had a tendency to fry your thigh. Not many riders took it out with shorts on.

Future Indian

On the CS Design Concepts website, it has the initial sketches and ideas for the tank, exhaust, gauges and brake systems. Is this the future? At this point it is anyones guess.

July 16th is Ride to Work Day! »

In many parts of the country, particularly those with vibrant local economies, automotive ‘gridlock’ is rapidly becoming an unattractive fact of life. This is due to the greatly increased use of single-occupancy automobiles.

Increases in automobile usage cannot be sustained without consequences, and this sentiment is beginning to have some resonance among the general public.

An objective analysis of the potential benefits of increased use of motorcycles will reveal that they are an underutilized solution, and that their value as a source of congestion relief is being largely ignored. Motorcycles are a legitimate part of the overall transportation mix, deserving of greater consideration in traffic planning procedures and by those responsible for all kinds of social policy decisions.

Our current culture largely considers motorcycles ‘toys’. This is an unfortunate hindrance to the status they deserve as a legitimate mode of personal transportation.
